"Grace. Teach me about grace."
Tyra, one of 172 girls drawn to Sex and the City Uncovered, a November 2015 Cru event in NYC, wanted to know more. Brittany, organizer of the event, happily obliged.
For weeks, Tyra, a senior business major, listened as Brittany unpacked God’s grace, something Tyra’s more “orthodox” background had not emphasized. Proving irresistible indeed, God’s grace prevailed, and Tyra began a personal relationship with Jesus; however, she wasn’t ready to pass it along to others.
“I invited Tyra to join our Florida Spring Break outreach - her enthusiasm took a dive once she found out we’d be sharing our faith with students on the beach,” Brittany said. Eventually Tyra agreed to come, but only as an observer.
However, that status changed once Tyra and Brittany hit the beach.
Spotting a huge blue umbrella, the two introduced themselves to the girl underneath it: Maria. From Mexico. Limited English.
Interestingly, Tyra grew up in Europe. Multi-lingual. Including Spanish!
So now we have a role reversal -- Brittany became the observer and Tyra the evangelist, flipping back and forth b/n Spanish, for Maria, and English, for Brittany. Part way into it, another girl overheard the discussion and walked over, parking herself in the wooden lounge chair next to Maria and joining in.
“What a thrill to hear Tyra explaining - in Spanish AND English - concepts she’d just learned about herself,” said Brittany. The time ended with the two girls surrendering their lives to Christ, and Tyra declaring, “I want to do this again!”
Tyra did “do it again - and again” throughout Big Break week. Her new role as “evangelist” continues, now that she’s back at her NY campus, sharing her story with her roommate, her friends, even her mom.
Tyra had hoped to further hone her translations skills and learn to share the gospel in Mandarin, having applied for Cru’s summer mission to E. Asia, but the visa and paperwork proved insurmountable - a huge disappointment.
According to Brittany, on a campus where most students keep to themselves, Tyra stands out as unusually popular. One afternoon, joining Tyra for a tour of her business school,. Brittany counted 17 people saying hello to Tyra by name in just one hour. “She literally knows everyone!”
A large NYC based investment firm has hired Tyra to begin work this fall. In the words of Brittany, “This student is about to be unleashed to live a life on mission, to impact the lives of her co-workers, the business world, and everyone she meets!”
