It wasn’t long before God guided Luke to a course of action. A linebacker for the Harvard Crimson, Luke along with several teammates meet weekly for a Cru Discipleship Group. Together they prayed for the gospel to impact the team. “Our goal was for every player to know someone who is actively following the Lord.”
As autumn turned to winter, this goal took on flesh. Five of the players from the Discipleship Group are now heading up Bible studies for several of the freshman and sophomore football players. According to Luke, there has been “lots of growth.”
Then, with winter inflicting cold and snow upon Boston in extreme degrees, another most memorable opportunity for gospel impact arose.
At about 1 AM, Luke, thinking he’d hit the sack and sleep in, got a call from Dan, another member of the Cru Discipleship Group: “Luke, what would you think about preaching a sermon in Cabot House lounge in the morning?”
It’s a good thing Luke agreed - Dan had already sent out an email to several circles of friends and acquaintances, inviting them to come! Luke pulled together some lessons learned from their D-Group study of Galatians for his “sermon.”
“About 35 showed up for the makeshift church service, men and women, Christian and non-Christian,” Luke said. “We met for about an hour, then we had brunch in the dining hall. Conversations, even prayer, continued after we’d dismissed. One senior said she was so happy to finally have Christian community here at Harvard.”
