“You are only as valuable as you look ...You are nothing more than a sexual object ...”
After buying these lies for way too long, Marian Jordan Ellis not only began to believe the truth, she’s made a ministry of it. 'Sex and the City Uncovered' tells of Marian’s journey from hook-ups, hangovers, and heartbreaks to Jesus’ unfailing love. When Marian shares her story, women respond - by the thousands.
Cru staff Megan Sheehan wanted to bring Marian and her story to the women of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.
The evening kicked off with music provided by Redeemed Girl Ministry, the name of Jordan’s ministry: “I let you push me past the breaking point, I stood for nothing so I fell for everything, You held me down but I got up …” Lyrics from Katy Perry and other familiar artists energized the girls as they crowded into the room. The Cru women and helpers hurriedly set up more chairs, printed more cards for comments.
That night 140 RPI women got insight into the lies that bombard them and encouragement to believe the truth. The presentation, interspersed with video clips from Sex and the City, prompted one student to comment, “Thanks for sharing such a [relevant] story. I’ve always thought religion or God was too “above” me and you really brought it home to me tonight.”
Megan and Steph followed up with the 39 who indicated a commitment to Christ that night. Megan shares some of the responses: “One described it as ‘dipping’ her toe in, not yet ready to jump in all the way. Another has now begun reading the Bible, following a devotional plan I gave her. And another broke down in tears, happy to finally find Christian community at RPI.”
“Girls' Night Out put us in touch with RPI women whom we were unlikely to meet otherwise.”
